The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
