Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
